Ota what?!

July 26th, 2005 by Michael Strickland

Oh no, I haven’t posted in over a week, have I? You poor, deprived souls. P.E. has taken it’s toll on me you see. Running, walking, jumping, skipping, push-uping, curling, stepping, pulling, stretching, eating, and resting (but not for long). The teachers are a lot better though, I respect them more because they don’t come off as stupid (as pretty much every P.E. teacher at CHS seemed). I’m wondering though, why is the Tae-Bo guy glistening with sweat before we’ve even started moving? But I’m half done! That’s right, I have just seven days of doom left before my life is back (for two weeks, anyway).

So, I saw Some Like It Hot at the Paramount on Sunday, and ran into two of my old teachers. I’m not sure if either of them saw me, but I was reminded of why I hate going to the downtown mall. I’m just surprised I didn’t see Mr. Evans there (he would be so proud of me, *tear*).

Ok, that was all boring, and I just wanted to get the formalities of talking about P.E. out of the way. The real news is what will occur in 24 days: Otakon 2005! Ahhh, by now you all should know my obsession with Japan (yes, in the most cliche way possible, I’m afraid). You may have also read my post about the Stargate convention in Arlington earlier this year. I never went, however, and have slightly regretted it ever since. I got another chance at convention peace when I realized that Otakon (a convention on “Eastern Asian Culture” or in other words, anime and manga) was still a month off (most of the others have already been held). Problem - it’s in Baltimore and the weekend before school. But after constant begging and a slight bribe (ok, fine, I asked), I get to go! I mean, come on, Richard Ian Cox is going to be there, how could I not go! Unfortunately, as I count down to Otakon, I will be simultaneously counting down to school, so I have mixed feelings about that.

C.D.

July 15th, 2005 by Michael Strickland

I’m still a bit jumpy around insects at the moment. This whole incident reminded me of a dream I had a few weeks ago - at any rate, it was just as terrifying. It was nighttime, not a strand of sunlight reached into the dark valley. There were hundreds of people, all moving - swaying almost - chanting a strange type of sound that I couldn’t put words to. There seemed to be a stage, and then I realized it. Then I realized it: I was at a concert, Celine Dion and Rod Stewart concert. And I was Celine Dion.

Is it seriously Harry Potter time again? I, of course, being a real Harry Potter fan have… not preordered it. Come to think of it, I didn’t last year either. Wow, I must say that was pretty stupid of me; I wonder how long it’ll be ’til I can find it? Come to think of it, I’ve only read most of the books once or twice, but I must have listened to them about 10 times each. I can’t concentrate right now, my sister is talking about 1st graders who like the letter “Q”, and that’s kind of distracting me.

Ah, it is truly a magical night, and not because of the little wizard who could. Stargate season premiere tonight! Meh, you all probably think I’m suck a dork (cue Amanda’s comment about my dorkiness). I hope it doesn’t start stinking, I haven’t been too impressed with the commercials (and guess what? none of you care!). I’m getting distracted again - my sister is now talking about stalking her teachers. You know, finding their house, walking over their, sneaking inside and stealing lab coats. Have fun Amanda.

Nowhere is safe.

July 13th, 2005 by Michael Strickland

I was thinking a few days ago about insects and other creatures of the earth. Did you know that I think wasps really suck? Wait a minute… I’ve said that before. Oh! Ha, ha, ha. You know, I have said that before. Gasp! I said that before when I got stung last year! But what does that mean?!… Ahh, I think I may know the answer to that:

I got stung again on Monday. You see, I must have gone over a nest again while mowing and not realized it until a few minutes later. But then I realize it - the wasps are chasing me! I run inside, and have about 10 frantic minutes of me running all over the house, up and down the stairs, thinking I was safe and then realizing there was a wasp crawling somewhere on my body. I ended up with my shirt and pants off (that’s where they were hiding) in my dad’s office for several hours, looking a slideshow of our pictures from New York. So basically, I’ve found at least 12 dead bees around the house in almost every room, meaning I had a dozen bees crawling over my pants as I ran all over the house. Fun Times. The thing is, bee stings don’t hurt that much, it’s just the thought that another one might sting you that’s worse. I personally can’t believe I got stung only one time. Die, creatures of the earth!

Can someone give me the etymology of the word “vacation”?

July 9th, 2005 by Michael Strickland

Eh, vacations. It was hot, I was wearing pants. It was raining, I was cold. It was in French, I was clueless. It was cool though, I saw Richard Kind in the Broadway play The Producers, and then saw him two days later in Bewitched (It was kind of freaky). Oh, best part of the trip: free high-speed internet! That’s right, to all you people with access to broadband at home (probably most of you. humph.), some people don’t have that little extra piece of happiness, so enjoy.

I’m afraid we went on too many tours however. There was a three hour tour in French, a three hour tour on a boat, and a six hour tour that was in English but was essentially a glorified bus ride. The tour I did like though was the UN tour. It was the third time I’d been on it, but hey, it’s still interesting! Besides, I got to know the answers to all of the guide’s questions and seem like I’m really smart when I’m not. Ah, but the highlight of my vacation (thankfully the last one I have to take for a long time) was not Times Square, free Starbucks ice cream samples, or (dare I say it) the New Jersey sky line! (cue scream). The best part was that I got to go to Nintendo World. I stayed there for two and a half hours and (nervous laugher) took over 150 pictures… But that doesn’t mean that I’m a freak, got it?!

The fireworks were cool too (mind you, they were only ones I’d seen since Minnesota, but heh, like they could compare to Minnesota fireworks!) Here’s a picture of their reflection off the UN building (yes it’s blurry, but it was a two second exposure, give me a break!):

The only good picture I took in New York. Posted by Picasa

And then we ride home on Amtrak hours before they increase their security due to the London terrorist attacks. And then we come home to discover ants everywhere. And then I look outside to see hundreds of bugs flying around, poised to attack if I try to mow the grass. And now I’m wasting the last moments of freedom before summer PE painting my mom’s office and being forced to look where I step, for there might be dead bugs or ants anywhere these days. DIE, creatures of the earth!
