I depart

November 18th, 2004 by Michael Strickland

This will truely be my last post for over 2 weeks. I’m going to France tomorrow, and that means that I’m missing 4 PE classes (I don’t care about any of the other school that I’m missing)! My mom’s there at some teaching job for a couple days, and we’re joining her on Saturday. I don’t really know anything else that’s happening, but it’s 9PM, and I’ve barely packed anything. I’m not prepared at all (I have my iPod tomorrow for the plain though, so until the battery runs out, I’ll be ok). My mom’s friend’s husbond that we’re staying with in France however speaks Japanese, so maybe a little learning might happen after all, please?

It turns out that auditions weren’t over after all - arg! I got called back for the vocal audition that’s happening tomorrow, of course I’ll be gone. So I had a lovely little dance around the school, bouncing from one teacher to another trying to find out how I could do the callback before tomorrow afternoon (I finally got an answer to go before school tomorrow). I’m actually going to have to get someone to email if I’m in or not on Monday. I will have so much homework these next two weeks! I have half a dozen outlines to do, tests to study for, journals to write, essays to write, it never ends!

I wish my cats were comming along, I don’t want them to be alone for two weeks, it’s depressing! I think that it will be fun, but I must say that I would rather be going to Japan. Why can’t someone in Japan hire my mom!? There is this college in Minnesota, Concordia, that has summer camps for languages. They have a Japanese camp, which I would gladly go to if it weren’t for my paralizing hatred of camps everywhere. They also have one weekend camp which lasts just four days, but it’s during the school year. What’s depressing me now is that it starts today. I’m sitting here thinking of the people in Minnesota right now learning Japanese while I’m just typing boring English.

We now part for a time, Blogger (who hasn’t updated my post count in over a month! Fools!), but I shall be back. Farewell, and may you not be forlorn,

Auditions stink!

November 15th, 2004 by Michael Strickland

Auditions are the worst invention of the past millennium. Who’s idea was it to make a persons involvement in something that will largely dictate his or her life for months rely solely on: 2 minutes of singing, which can easily be messed up (especially if it was the first time in your life singing solo in front of people), another 2 minutes of dance (this is slightly more appropriate than anything else), and a few hours of acting auditions, in which you will probably only get up a few times considering how many people are trying out.

If you haven’t guessed yet, my vocal audition for West Side Story was today. I sang Ol’ Man River from Show Boat, and since I didn’t have the music with me, I messed up about 4 times. I knew not to look at the judges while I was singing, but I had to afterwards and it just looked like they hated it. I love how the judges were all sitting up high, all looking down on the person. It reminded me of an ancient high court during the trial of a murderer or something. Hopefully the dance audition will go better tomorrow.

Also, I will be leaving for France on Friday, so I will stop posting for about two weeks (big surprise, I know). I am going to have so much homework as I’m missing 7 days of school, and make up a bunch of tests. At least some of the teachers are being nice and exempting me from certain projects.

In my theater class at the moment, we are doing voice work, and are in the middle of a radio show project. We all had to write a script, and our groups would choose one from that group. We chose mine (aside from by persistent rejection of the decision). I thought it sounded a lot better with everyone reading it, though. Our group rocks, the other people in it have come up with ridiculously awesome character voices. I’ve got nothing else to say,

I hate getting up early

November 12th, 2004 by Michael Strickland

Oh, I can’t tell you how many posts I lose by clicking “save”, and have the next page not load, thus deleting my post. I write long paragraphs about what I consider very funny incidents, involving things like leafblowers, killing yourself by using self defense, and various other topics that I simply cannot do justice by writing them again. Just know what your missing, regardless of how crappy my writing may or may not be.

So many things in our society relies of people losing their products. Take pencils, for example. I met very few people who actually use the whole pencil, people normally lose them, break them, get them stolen in a classroom, or not use them for long enough so that the erasers get all useless.

Also, the one act play that I’m in won first in district! There were four schools competing at my school (so we did have a slight advantage), and all of the judges ranked us 1 out of 4. Personally, I thought that it was one of my weaker performances, but hopefully I’ll do better at the regional, which is tomorrow. There, 8 schools (the top two from the four districts) will be competing, and I am so grateful that we’re going third (I would have hated to wait that long before performing). The bad news, we have to be at school by 5:15 tomorrow. AM. As in morning. As in I have to wake up at 4! But it will be fun. And if I get into West Side Story for the spring play, it will be even more hectic in a few months, isn’t that wonderful?

I will not be talking for the next few days as I sleep of my 4AM wakeup tomorrow (not that I post much anyway), but I needed something to end this post with.

My very late election commentary

November 8th, 2004 by Michael Strickland

Well, Bush won. I can’t say that I’m too surprised, I’d known that this was going to happen for weeks. A lot of people are very angry about this - bored on Thursday night, I watched about five minutes of Larry King Live, and they practically had to cut the caller off as she was basically yelling at the Bush supporters.

I guess I was wrong about it taking weeks before the courts picked the winner, I’m still surprised in a way that Kerry conceded. I still haven’t watched his speech, but I hear that there was a very interesting moment involving someone shouting out, “I’ve got your back, man!”. While the Democrats lost seats in basically everything (including Senate Minority leader Tom Daschle, who’s been in office for like ever), they made some Senate Victories however.

Recently, President Bush commented on his bipartisan plan for his second term. He said that Republicans and Democrats can agree to aggressively pursue the war on terror. Sorry, but that’s like saying “Republicans and Democrats can agree to aggressively fight gay marriage and abortion. Or like he said during his last press conference, how he plans to reach across the aisle to people with the same ideals. It just doesn’t work like that.

Election 2004

November 2nd, 2004 by Michael Strickland

What follows is my totally live (and totally un-spellchecked) coverage of the 2004 Presidential Election. Enjoy.

6:55PM

Here it is, it’s all comes down to this. The first polls close in five minutes (including Virginia). I’m watching CNN, the only news station we get (not that I’m complaining about CNN), but they don’t have a big board with cutouts (they do have a big electronic board however). CNN has signs from the three major candidates in the backgro… wait, Nader has a running mate named Camejo? I didn’t know that!

6:57PM

THE first POLLS CLOSE IN THREE MINUTES! I wonder if Wolf Blitzer has insurance on his face…

7:00PM

The first polls have closed, and Bush is winning 34 to 3 (Virginia isn’t predicted yet). Not a good start for the Kerry morale

7:20PM

Actually, the Republicans are winning so far in the White House, Senate and House races at the moment. Still nothing of Al Weed for Congress though.

7:30PM

And Bush is up to 39 EV, I’d hate to be Kerry at the moment. Wow, Maine can split it’s electoral votes, that’s really cool. Go Maine! This is cool, the TV, my computer, and CNN.com are all in complete sync time wise. I feel so important.

7:45PM

Not much has been happening, but 16 states are closing in 15 minutes. I’m glad an independant has won a house seat in Vermont. Interesting, more males are voting for Bush than Females, and vice versa for Kerry.

8:00PM

The new poll are in, and Kerry is winning 77 to 66. Florida and Pennsilvania aren’t in yet, both battleground states. Darn! At the moment, Weed (running for 5th district Virginia) is losing 30% to 70% against Incumbant Goode.

8:30PM

Arg, Weed’s going to lose, I can tell. Bush is back up to 84, ahead of Kerry still at 77, and Virginia is now projected to be taken by Bush. Kerry is looking to take Pennsilvania, and Minnesota is up next at 9PM. Ooh, this is getting so exciting!

8:57PM

I forgot that a lot of states are voting to ban same-sex marriages today, and it’s looking like the amendment is doing fairly well, all of the projected outcomes so far going for banning it.

9:00PM

Hey Nebraska can also split it’s votes. Bush is now up 155 to 112, but Minnesota isn’t in yet. Also, nothing projected so far is any different than the 2000 election.

10:00PM

Bush gets Utah, STILL NO MINNESOTA! Come on, people! It’s depressing how poorly Nader is doing, I mean he got upwards of 5 percent in some states in 2000, and he’s bearly scraping 1 or 2 this year.

10:42PM

It’s dark outside. Becoming…difficult…to stay…aWAKE! AH! WHAT’S GOING ON?! Oh wait, false alarm, nothings happened for the past few HOURS! I’ve got my play tomorrow, so I’ll have to go to bed soon. So far, nothing that has been projected to be won that is different than the winner in the 2000 election, so while Bush is leading 193 to 112 EV, in my opinion, it’s still tied. Wow, the Senate race in S. Dakota is almost tied with only 21 votes between Daschle and Thune. Kerry is starting to win Minnesota.

10:50PM

Finally, something happened! Kerry just got Pennsilvania, bringing it up to 133 to 193 with Bush in the lead. Again, same exact track as 2000 (I’m not sure about the states with split EV’s, but give or take 1).

11:00PM

California goes to Kerry, none of the other called yet. As it stands, Bush still has a very slight lead of Kerry with 193 to 188 EV’s.

11:13PM

I have to go to bed now. Current tally: Bush - 197 Kerry - 188, still with no change from 2000. I’d like to point out New Hampshire though, which went Bush in 2000 and is at a dead tie at the moment. Hopefully I can wake up at about 3 to comment once more.

7:41AM

Well, all but New Mexico, Ohio and Iowa. If the same states were called at the 2000 election, Kerry would be looking good, but of the three uncalled states, two went to Gore, and at the moment it’s looking like all three are going to go to Bush. Minnesota went Kerry, as I expected, and Bush won Florida by a much more confortable margin.
